Serena: IDE-style code tools for your agent over MCP
Added New⧉ Copyable prompt below
Our verdict
Worth adding when your agent works in a large codebase and keeps grepping and editing by line number. Serena gives it IDE-like tools such as find references and rename at the symbol level, for any MCP client. Setup is a few commands, but follow the README's install path: it warns against marketplace installs.
- Who it's for
- Developers using Claude Code, Codex or other MCP clients on large codebases
- Leverage
- Fewer, more reliable edits in big repos
- Effort

What it does
Serena (GPL-3.0-or-later) provides semantic code retrieval, editing, refactoring and debugging tools that operate at the symbol level. It integrates with any client or LLM via the Model Context Protocol, uses language servers for 40+ languages by default, and can use a JetBrains plugin backend instead.
How builders use it
- Install uv, then uv tool install -p 3.13 serena-agent.
- Run serena init to verify the setup (add -b JetBrains to use the JetBrains backend).
- Configure the launch command in your MCP client following Serena's client docs.
- Ask the agent to use Serena's symbol tools for renames and cross-file changes.
What to expect
Agents make cross-file changes through precise symbol operations instead of fragile text edits.
