Our verdict

The quickest way to give a chat model a whole codebase, for a review, an explainer or a migration plan. It respects .gitignore, drops files that look like credentials, and can compress code to cut tokens. For large repos, compress and include only what matters; a huge dump still dilutes the model's attention.

What it does

Repomix packs a repository into a single AI-friendly file (repomix-output.xml by default) with per-file and total token counts. It is git-aware, uses Secretlint to leave out files matching credential formats, can pack remote repos with --remote, compresses code with Tree-sitter via --compress, runs as an MCP server with --mcp, and can generate Claude Agent Skills with --skill-generate. There is also a website, browser extension and VS Code extension.

How builders use it

  • Run npx repomix@latest in a project and attach repomix-output.xml to a chat.
  • Pack a library you depend on with repomix --remote owner/repo --compress to ask how it works.
  • Exclude noise with --ignore "**/*.log,tmp/".
  • Run repomix --mcp so an agent can pack codebases itself.
