Our verdict
A good pick if you want a free, model-agnostic agent you control, with a desktop app as well as a CLI. Extensions connect through MCP, so the same servers you use elsewhere plug straight in. Expect to tune your model choice: results track the model you bring.

What it does
goose is a general-purpose, open-source (Apache 2.0) AI agent that runs on your machine, for code and for research, writing and automation. It ships as a desktop app for macOS, Linux and Windows, a CLI and an API, works with 15+ providers (including Ollama for local models) and connects to extensions via the Model Context Protocol. It is part of the Agentic AI Foundation at the Linux Foundation.
How builders use it
- Install the CLI or desktop app and point it at the model provider you already pay for.
- Add MCP extensions for GitHub, your database or a browser.
- Run it against a local model through Ollama when code must not leave your machine.
What to expect
A capable agent loop with no vendor lock-in on model or editor.
