WhatsApp MCP: read-only personal chats for your agent

Added NewCopyable prompt below

Published Last verified Released

Our verdict

A practical personal-context MCP when WhatsApp is where decisions live and you only need search and read, not send. You deploy it in your Cloudflare account, link the phone like WhatsApp Web, and point Claude Code at the /mcp URL; messages stay in a Durable Object SQLite database you own. It is unofficial: Baileys uses the WhatsApp Web protocol, which is against WhatsApp's terms, so account risk is real. Large first imports need the Workers Paid plan (CPU limit); the README says the free plan is untested for that. Your agent's model provider still sees tool results, so treat chats as leaving the device.

What it does

finereli/whatsapp-mcp is a small Cloudflare Workers app: link once via QR (or phone number), then on demand and about once a day it connects, pulls what WhatsApp queued, stores it, and disconnects. MCP tools search and read chats and can save display names for unnamed numbers; they cannot send messages. Media appears as labels such as [image], not downloads. One deployment is one WhatsApp account. Needs a Cloudflare account, Node 20+, and wrangler.

How builders use it

  • Clone the repo, npm install, create the OAUTH_KV namespace, set OWNER_PASSWORD, then npm run deploy.
  • Open the Worker URL, scan the QR with WhatsApp Linked Devices, wait for the first history import.
  • claude mcp add --transport http whatsapp https://your-url/mcp, then /mcp and sign in with the owner password.
  • Ask only read questions; keep approvals on, and do not run this on an account you cannot afford to lose.

What to expect

Agent answers grounded in your WhatsApp history, with send disabled by design.

Copy this: Deploy + connect Claude Code

# Official source: github.com/finereli/whatsapp-mcp
# Against WhatsApp terms; read-only reduces but does not remove account risk.
# Large first import: Workers Paid plan (see README).
git clone https://github.com/finereli/whatsapp-mcp
cd whatsapp-mcp && npm install
npx wrangler kv namespace create OAUTH_KV # paste id into wrangler.jsonc
npx wrangler secret put OWNER_PASSWORD
npm run deploy

# Open the printed URL → Link WhatsApp → then:
claude mcp add --transport http whatsapp https://<your-worker>/mcp
# In Claude Code: /mcp → sign in with OWNER_PASSWORD

Ask:
What did <name> say about <topic> this week? Cite chat titles and dates; do not invent messages.
