magpie: choose the model for every coding agent in one app

Our verdict
Yes, if you run more than one coding agent and want to mix models: magpie points every agent at one local gateway that translates between the OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini formats, so Codex can run on DeepSeek or Claude Code on Kimi, chosen from one list. Routing groups fail over between keys and accounts when a quota runs out. Two cautions. Before using a Claude or ChatGPT subscription inside other agents, check that provider's terms, because magpie can reuse plans you are signed in to. And it reads your agents' sign-ins (their files and the Keychain) unless you turn that off, and sends a daily anonymous usage ping unless you set DO_NOT_TRACK=1. It is new (first tag 23 September 2026) and ships builds almost daily.
- Who it's for
- Developers who use several coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, OpenCode and others) and want to switch models, keys and subscriptions without editing each agent's config
- Leverage
- One place to set the model for every coding agent, with failover when a quota runs out
- Effort
- Low

What it does
magpie (yetone/magpie, MIT, by the author of avante.nvim) is a Go app for macOS, Windows and Linux with a menu bar UI, TUI, web UI and CLI, plus Docker and Termux builds. It runs a gateway on 127.0.0.1:3425 that every supported agent is wired to, and routes each request to the provider you chose: an API key, a local model, or a Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini or Grok plan you are signed in to. Routing groups combine several models with modes such as smart (use the plan that renews soonest), order, rotate, usage and pace. It also shows quota left on each plan and token cost per model. It only lists agents installed on your machine; anything that takes a base URL can use the gateway too.
How builders use it
- Install from usemagpie.ai, with the install script, or with go install github.com/yetone/magpie@latest.
- Add a provider: magpie provider add deepseek <key>, or Providers then Add provider in the app.
- Set a model per agent, for example magpie claude deepseek/deepseek-v4-pro, then start a new agent session.
- Create a routing group with routing=smart to fail over between accounts, and check magpie quota for what is left.
- If you don't want magpie to read existing sign-ins, run magpie accounts discovery off; API-key providers still work.
What to expect
Each coding agent on the model you chose, switched from one place, with requests moving to the next account when one runs out.
